Notes for PLINEY MERRILL:
Pliney was with his parents in 1850 Buchanan Co., MO, age 13. His father, Henry, was born August 14, 1800, in Mongalia Co., VA (now WV). His mother, Mary Ann, was age 33 in 1850 born PA. In the 1860 census for Center Twp., Buchanan Co., MO, Pliney was age 22 and working with others on a farm.
His grandparents were John Merrill and Jemima Batton.
Pliney's children by Sarah Jane DeVorss were probably adopted by her 2nd husband Josiah J. Elder, or at least took his surname. They were listed on the 1880 census as Elders, and son Edwin was known to go by Elder. However, in 1900 Edwin Marrow, son, age 30, was listed with Sarah and John J. Elder.
Notes for JOSIAH J. ELDER:
Mrs. Sarah Jane Elder is listed as an heir in the final disposition of John J. DeVorss' estate, and J. J. Elder was paid $125 in the course of settling John's estate. J. J. Elder was also an appraiser of the 1875 estate of Lewis R. DeVorss, a brother to Sarah. J. J. Elder was also a witness on an account of John J. DeVorss' estate filed by Maglin A. DeVorss in 1879.
The only clue as to Josiah's family is that his son Wiliam Calvin was listed as a nephew (nearest relative in Mount Auburn Cemetery records) of Joseph J. Elder who died June 20 1908 at age 68.

Joseph E. Elder d. 3 Mar 1901 Registars' #126 (this man died age 53)
Joseph J. Elder d. 20 Jun 1908 Registars' #57-17 (no info)
Note: Joseph J. Elder's cemetery record shows him buried at Mount Auburn 6-20-08, age 68, and the nearest relative is W. C. Elder - nephew. So this is probably Josiah's brother. The identity of Joseph E. Elder is not known at this time, but does not appear to be Josiah.

29. JAMES GRANVILLE4 DEVORSS (JOHN J.3, JOSEPH2, DANIEL1) was born June 18, 1846 in Buchanan Co., MO, and died March 18, 1924 in St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO. He married ADELENE SMITH October 31, 1872 in St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO, daughter of HENRY SMITH and EVE (BECK?). She was born November 28, 1852, and died April 07, 1907 in St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO.
Notes for JAMES GRANVILLE DEVORSS:
James was given 41.05 acres of land by his father. It was in township 57, Range 34, section 31 of Buchanan Co., MO. On October 3, 1872 James sold this land for $1 to Henry Smith. It is not known if this was Henry P. Smith, his father-in-law, or the Henry Smith who is buried at Feuquay Cemetery near James' father.
When his father died in 1877 his step-mother went to court to prevent James from receiving any more of his father's estate. She stated that his father had already given him land, a wagon, 2 horses and harnesses, and $250 to build a house. The court ruled in her favor.

Married by the Methodist Circuit Rider, Cyrus Dodgett, and not recorded until 3 Jan 1873.
Called Addie. Buried with her sister Sarah Smith Kennard. Although the record is at the cemetery, the stone is gone. She died of Bright's disease.
Obit: "Mrs. Adelene DeVorss, 54 years old, wife of James G. DeVorss, died yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. H. S. Jenkins, 2104 1/2 South Tenth street. Death was caused by dropsy. The sons are, Edwin B., Charles W. and Nelson B., of St. Joseph; Louis R., of Kansas Cit, and James H., of San Francisco. The daughters are Mrs. H. S. Jenkins and Mrs. Steve Lonnich of St. Joseph, and Mrs. Daniel Hill of Kansas City."
Henry P. Smith, Adelene's father, was a juror in 1859 on a case that brought national attention. During the time that the southern states were threatening to secede from the union, a band of men from Missouri chased a wagon transporting slaves from MO to Kansas. The driver of the wagon was caught and jailed. The legislature of Kansas hired the best legal talent in the country to defend him and the trial lasted 3 days, but after only a few moments of deliberation the jury returned a verdict of guilty. The case was appealed to the U. S. Supreme Court, but while pending a party of Kansans broke the wagon driver out of jail and escaped back to Kansas. (Henson DeVorss 1818-1900 was also on this jury.

32. REBECCA CREIGHTON4 DEVORSS (LEVI3, DANIEL2, DANIEL1) was born December 25, 1854, and died 1938. She married (1) PATRICK QUINN in MO. He was born 1840 in Ireland, and died Abt. 1885. She married (2) MARCUS LAFAYETTE MINER Bef. 1900.
Notes for REBECCA CREIGHTON DEVORSS:
Rebecca's father, Levi, strongly disapproved of her marriage to Patrick and so they eloped on a railroad hand car. Rebecca and Patrick were in Forbes, Holt Co., MO in the 1880 census. After Patrick died Rebecca refused to accept financial help from her father. To support herself and the children she ran a boarding house and took in laundry. She also sold books for a while. There are several pictures of Rebecca with her mother in later years, but it is not known if her relationship with her father improved before his death.
In the 1900 census Rebecca was with her second husband in Lincoln Twp., Andrew Co., MO. With them were Mary and George Quinn.
Rebecca liked to tell stories to her grandchildren. Almira Quinn related this story from Rebecca:
"One day when Patrick was away several men came to the house. A man (probably Jesse James) came to the house and asked to come in. He asked questions about Savannah. As he was leaving I looked out of the window and saw two black hats sticking up back of the wood pile. I remained calm. Later a store or bank was robbed and Patrick happened to be present. He saved his money by dropping it on the top of his hat as he raised his hands."
Notes for PATRICK QUINN:
Was an Irish Catholic who was born aboard ship as his parents were coming from Dublin, Ireland. It is thought they came to Virginia. Later Patrick moved to Missouri and worked on the railroad. Levi DeVorss gave some land to the railroad which ran near the DeVorss home in Forbes, MO, so maybe Patrick and Rebecca met then. At any rate, Levi opposed the marriage and Patrick and Rebecca eloped on a hand car, probably to St. Joseph. Their children were christened as infants in the Catholic Church, possibly in Savannah, MO.
May be related to James and Annie Young Quinn who came to St. Joseph, MO in the spring of 1842 to be near family who were already there.
1850 census Buchanan Co., MO: transcribed Queen
