2. JOSEPH2 DEVORSS (DANIEL1) was born Bef. 1790 in PA, and died Bef. November 04, 1845 in Buchanan Co., MO. He married MARY ANN LADD June 16, 1811 in Ross Co., OH. She died Bef. March 31, 1849 in Buchanan Co., MO.
Notes for JOSEPH DEVORSS:
Named spelled Devowese on his marriage certificate.
Served in the War of 1812 from Ross Co., OH, 1st Regiment (McDonald's) in Amaziah Morgan's Co. between July 28 and August 9, 1813.
Listed on page 298 #36 in the 1820 Federal census for Twin Township, Ross Co., OH, as Joseph Devoss age 26-45, one female 26-45, two males under 10, and two females under 10.
Note: There is another Joseph Devoss age 26-45 in the federal census of 1820 for Twin Township, Ross Co., OH on page 298 #27. He is listed with one female age 26-45, one female age 10-16, two males under 10, and two females under 10. The identity of this Joseph is unknown, but is thought to be the Joseph Devoss who married Catherine Miller April 17, 1807 in Ross Co., OH. There is a probate record in Ross Co., OH where Catherine DeVoss is named adm. of Joseph Devoss' estate in 1822.
Note: In the 1830 Federal census for Twin Township, Ross Co., OH there is only one Joseph Devoss. He is on page 261 #26 and George Shanks is # 27. (Joseph's daughter Silvina married George Shanks.) The next two names are Daniel DeVoss, his father, and William DeVoss, his brother. Joseph is listed as age 40-50, but has two females age 40-50 with him. Also with him are one female age 10-15, 2 males age 10-15, three males age 5-10, two females under 5, and three males under 5.
Joseph probably went to Tippecanoe Co., IN after this census. His brother Daniel and sister Ann Ford went there, and 2 of Joseph's children were married in Tippecanoe in 1836 and 1838.
About 1838 there was an outbreak of marlaria around the Wabash River in Tippecanoe Co., IN. Joseph's family (and his brother Daniel's family) left IN around that time or shortly after.
Joseph DeVorss was taxed in 1840 for two horses or mules, twelve cattle, and eight clocks or watches in Buchanan Co., MO. In 1842 he was taxed for 1 horse or mule, 7 cattle, and 5 clocks or watches.
Owned 160 acres in township 57, range 36, section 36 in Buchanan Co., MO. This was the northeast quarter. (His brother John D. DeVorss owned 160 acres of the southwest quarter.) Joseph's patent was
#1639 under the name Joseph Devorss Senior and not signed until April 1, 1846, probably by his heirs. On the same date patent #1640 was signed by Joseph's son, John J. DeVorss.
His will was recorded in Buchanan Co., MO Book B, page 402-3 on November 4, 1845.
I Joseph Devorss being of sound mind but weak in body knowing the certainty of Death and the uncertainty of life do make this my last will and Testament. Signed in the presence of Simon Davis, Jas. M. Gibson
Joseph's wife must have died by March 31, 1849, when his son Thomas sold his share. Thomas sold his broher James' share about 1855. Son John J. sold his undivided 1/5 share February 17, 1847. The only other record found for Joseph's land is on September 4, 1849 when son John J. sold an unidentified amount of it for the benefit of Benjamin B. DeVorss as his guardian. Benjamin is thought to be the son of Daniel.
Notes for MARY ANN LADD:
Mary Ann's marriage certificate has been transcribed as Mary Ann Lodd. However, Thomas Ladd is listed as an early settler of Twin Township, Ross Co., OH, and Ellison Ladd served in the same company as Mary Ann's husband Joseph DeVorss in the War of 1812. Other clues include the names of Mary Ann's children; Thomas, and Silvania (Sylvania Ladd was Ellison Ladd's mother).
Children of JOSEPH DEVORSS and MARY LADD are:
7. i. SILVINA3 DEVORSS, b. Bet. 1810 - 1815, Ross Co., OH.
8. ii. DANIEL DEVORSS, b. Bet. 1810 - 1820, Ross Co., OH; d. Bef. December 08, 1846, Buchanan Co., MO.
iii. UNKNOWN DAUGHTER DEVORSS, b. Bet. 1810 - 1820; d. Bef. 1845.
Notes for UNKNOWN DAUGHTER DEVORSS:
Her father, Joseph, is shown as having 2 females and 2 males under age 10 in the 1820 census for Twin Twp., Ross Co., OH. This is the only evidence that this child existed.
Joseph was in Tippecanoe Co., IN in the 1830's where two of his children were married (Ruthann in 1836 and John J. in 1838). A neighbor of the DeVorss family in Randolph Township was Joseph Martin. There is a marriage record in Tippecanoe Co., IN for Joseph Martin March 9, 1837 to Nancy DeVorse. If this was a daughter of Joseph, she probably died before 1845 as she is not mentioned in Joseph's will. Joseph's brother Daniel was also in Randolph Township at the same time and not all of his children have been proven.
9. iv. JOHN J. DEVORSS, b. February 1816, Twin Twp., Ross Co., OH; d. August 08, 1877, Buchanan Co., MO.
10. v. THOMAS L. DEVORSS, b. Abt. 1821, Ross Co., OH.
11. vi. RUTHANN DEVORSS, b. March 25, 1822, Ross Co., OH; d. December 31, 1854, Gentry Co., MO.
vii. JAMES L. DEVORSS, b. Abt. 1823, Ross Co., OH; d. Aft. November 14, 1850.
Notes for JAMES L. DEVORSS:
In will of grandfather Daniel DeVorss (1769-1844). "...Fourthly my Dun Horse I give and bequeath to James Devorss my Grand Son, Son of Joseph Devorss..."
Not married at the time his father, Joseph, made his will in 1845.
1850 census Buchanan Co., MO, page 27, #401, James L. DeVorss age 27 born OH (only person in household). (Thomas, his brother, was on page 27, #399.)
James and brother Thomas jointly inherited 1/2 of their father's property in 1845, to be given to them after their mother's death. Joseph's will provided that if either James or Thomas died without children, the surviving one inherited the rest. Thomas sold his share in 1849 and James' share about 1855.
John J. Devorss sold the south half of his lot #3 in block 32 in St. Joseph, MO to his brother, Thomas, on January 11, 1848 for $65. Thomas sold it to brother James on March 24, 1848 for $75 with a promissory note for $1. It is thought that all of this lot was eventually abandoned.
Although James bought 20 acres of land near his brothers John J. and Thomas on June 3, 1850, he sold it on July 10, 1850.
Grantor Land Records, Buchanan Co., MO, Book I, page 450:
On the 26th day of September 1852. John J. Devorss and Susanah Devorss his wife and Thomas Devorss and Rebecca Devorss his wife of the County of Buchanan and Daniel Spainhower and Ruthann Spainhower his wife of the County of Gentry. To Mary Ann Doherty in consideration of natural love and affection which they have for the party of the second part and for the further consideration of the sum of one dollar. Lot number two in Block number fifty-five in the town of St. Joseph.
This lot was had been purchased by James L. Devorss from Joseph Rodidoux and Angelique Robidoux his wife on November 14 1850. It is possible that James died unmarried and the lot fell to his surviving siblings, John J., Thomas, Ruthann DeVorss Spainhower, and Mary Ann DeVorss Doherty.
12. viii. MARY ANN DEVORSS, b. Abt. 1826, Ross Co., OH.
3. DANIEL2 DEVORSS (DANIEL1) was born Abt. 1793 in Mason Co., KY, and died Aft. 1850 in Holt Co., MO. He married (1) MARY FORD September 12, 1816 in Ross Co., OH, daughter of BENJAMIN FORD and MARY APRIORSON. She was born Abt. 1798 in KY, and died Bef. 1848. He married (2) HARRIETTA/CHARLET TURNER September 21, 1848 in Buchanan Co., MO. She was born March 21, 1808 in KY, and died November 09, 1879 in Forest City, Holt Co., MO.
Notes for DANIEL DEVORSS:
Served in the War of 1812 from Ross Co., OH in the 1st Regiment (McDonald's) in Amaziah Morgan's Company from July 28 to August 9, 1813.
Daniel Devoss and Daniel Devoss Junior appeared before the commissioners of Twin Township, Ross Co., OH in 1818.
May have been living with his father in the 1820 census.
Several wagon trains left Ross Co., OH for Tippecanoe Co., IN about 1829-1835. Among the families were Daniel DeVorss and wife Mary Ford, Thomas Ford and wife Ann DeVorss, Joseph and Mary Ann DeVorss, William Ford and wife Sarah Yoakum. The Fords were all siblings.
Daniel DeVorss signed a land patent in 1833 for 40 acres in Randolph Township in the northeast corner above Romney. Besides the families listed above, other neighbors included Andrew Crouch (land patent 1829), John Mcahan (Mahon or McMahon) who signed a land patent the same day as Daniel, and Joseph Martin who married a Nancy Devorse on March 9, 1837 in Tippecanoe Co., IN. Nancy's identity is not known for sure.
No census record has been found for Daniel in 1830, however, this one in 1840 may be his. Daughter Anna married Abraham Crouch 15 Feb 1833 in Vermillion Co., IL.
1840 Danville Twp., Vermillion Co., IL, M704, R71, p. 90:

Notes for MARY FORD:
Sister to Thomas Ford who married Ann DeVorss, her husband's sister.
Notes for HARRIETTA/CHARLET TURNER:
In the index of marriage records for Buchanan Co., MO for Devorse, Daniel in 1848 is the name Harriet Lanar, but it is crossed out and the name Sharlet Turner is written in. Another person transcribed it as Charlet Turner.
In the Holt Co., MO census for 1850 Russell Turney age 52 b. KY is enumerated between Daniel and Harriet DeVorss and Daniel's son, Levi. An 1837 court record in Wayne Co., IL shows that Russell Turney's brother William F. Turney was charged with fornication. The woman named was Charlotte Turner. Although Daniel DeVorss and his first wife had a son named John b. 1816-1820, there is a John DeVorss age 13 b. Ia listed with Daniel and Harriet in the 1850 census. Russell Turney's children are listed as born in Ia 1836-1843.
On December 11, 1838, William F. Turney wrote a will "in case my present disease proves fatal". In it he leaves a lot on Water Street purchased of Hatchells estate to Harriet Turner, daughter of Fielding C. Turner.

6. WILLIAM2 DEVORSS (DANIEL1) was born Abt. 1800 in Mason Co., KY, and died Bef. March 06, 1849 in Buchanan Co., MO. He married ANN ACTON October 05, 1826 in Pike Co., OH. She was born Bet. 1800 - 1810, and died Bef. 1850.
Notes for WILLIAM DEVORSS:
May have been living with his parents in Ross Co., OH in 1820 as there were 2 males age 16-26.
In 1830 he is living near his father in Ross Co., OH: 1 male age 20-30, 1 female age 20-30, 1 male under 5, 1 female under 5.
By the 1840 census he is still there recorded as William DeVois (as is his father): 1 male age 40-50, 1 female age 30-40, 2 males 5-10, 1 female under 5, 1male under 5.
Along with his brother John, was executor of his father's estate 1844 Buchanan Co., MO.
William died intestate in Buchanan Co., MO. Probate records dated Mary 6, 1849 show Joseph DeVorss as Admr. and Sec. Hanson DeVors and Francis Lattun.
An unidentified Edee DeVorss was mentioned in William's father's will in 1844.
In the 1850 census for Lake Township, Buchanan Co., MO is:
Dwelling #1243, family #1251
Edy DeVorss, male, farmer, age 40, land evaluation $1000, born OH
Hannah Devorss, 23 born OH
Ann Devorss, 12 born MO
Sarah Devorss, 10 born MO
Joseph Devorss, 2 born MO
Dwelling #1244, family #1252
Samuel Devorss, 24, property evaluation $200, born OH
Minerva Devorss, 24 born OH (has OH written over KY)
Note: Samuel and Minerva were also listed next to Joseph and Rebecca DeVorss in 1850, and Samuel is thought to have died in December 1850.
A curiosity is that an Edy DeVorss married Cyrus Sprague December 12, 1852 in Buchanan Co., MO.
None of William's children have been proven.
Best "guess": Edy is incorrectly identified as male in the 1850 census, and she was William's widow. Joseph may have been the son of Samuel and Minerva. William brought his father to MO and that's why Daniel left a few things to "Edee" in his will. This is all speculation.
Children of WILLIAM DEVORSS and ANN ACTON are:
26. i. SAMUEL3 DEVORSS, b. Bet. 1826 - 1828, Ross Co., OH; d. Aft. November 15, 1850, Buchanan Co., MO.
ii. HANNAH DEVORSS, b. Abt. 1827; m. RANDOLPH MCGANDOT, March 17, 1854, Buchanan Co., MO.
Notes for HANNAH DEVORSS:
Believed to be the Hannah who was age 23 in the household of Edy DeVorss in 1850 Buchanan Co., MO. Edy, a male, was born ca 1810 OH. A female Edy DeVorss married Cyrus Sprague in Buchanan Co., MO in 1852. Edee DeVorss was mentioned in the 1844 will of Daniel DeVorss. His/her relationship to the family is unknown.
